Letter from Masanjia

Impact | Vancity Theatre Screening
When Oregon mom Julie Keith discovered an SOS note in a box of made-in-China Halloween decorations, she had no idea how profoundly it would affect her. Director Leon Lee tracked down the man who sent that letter from the notorious Masanjia labour camp: Sun Yi, a soft-spoken engineer and a married man, whose only crime was to practice Falun Gong, a form of Buddhist-style meditation which gained such overwhelming popularity in China in the 1990s that the Communist Party declared it a subversive cult and cracked down on its members.
Sun Yi’s story is often heartbreaking. Although he was released from the labour camp the persecution continued, taking a toll on his wife and extended family. Eventually he plans to flee the country, but this painful decision will have profound repercussions…

Director Leon Lee will be in attendance Aug 3 - 5
