Arshad Khan's first person documentary has a good deal to say about our life and times. His journey would have seemed unthinkable to earlier generations, which explains why his strained relationship with his parents is the focal point here.
"[Arshad] will bring me great shame, or fame," was Arshad's father's prediction many years ago. Abu (Father) draws heavily on the Khan family's home videos - as well as clips from Bollywood musicals and animated sequences - to bring to life what was initially a happy childhood in a prosperous, liberal Muslim home in Islamabard, Pakistan, in the 1980s. A downturn in their fortunes eventually led the family to emigrate to Canada, but the teenage, gay and miserable Arshad didn't fit in there either. And by the time he did come to terms with himself, his parents' religious beliefs had hardened in the post 9/11 world.
