Vancity Theatre Screening | Panorama
15-year-old Connie (Laura Dern) spends her languid summer days drifting between the beach and the mall, this idyll occasionally disrupted by ugly blow-ups with her mom (Mary Kay Place) who has a way with cutting remarks. ("I look right into your eyes and all I see are some trashy daydreams.") When it comes to chasing boys, Connie’s technique owes more to enthusiasm than prowess. Now, having aroused the interest of a manipulative older stranger (Treat Williams, radiating male entitlement), she’s about to learn how a legitimate predator stalks their quarry.
Based on Joyce Carol Oates’ "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?", Joyce Chopra’s unflinching drama remains a provocative coming-of-age portrait 35 years after it claimed the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Featuring an utterly mesmerising performance from Dern in her first leading role, Smooth Talk astutely captures instances of elation and heartache as it builds to a riveting climactic standoff that still ranks as one of the most powerful scenes of the actor’s decorated career.
