In his first film since Gone Girl in 2014, David Fincher (The Social Network; Zodiac) focuses on the creative tension between experienced screenwriter Herman J Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) and the prodigious newcomer Orson Welles (Tom Burke) in the genesis of what would come to be called the greatest movie ever made, Citizen Kane. Kane was a thinly disguised portrait of one of the most powerful men in America, the media tycoon William Randolph Hearst, whose mistress, the actress Marion Davies (Amanda Seyfried) was a friend of Mank’s.
Based on a screenplay by the late Jack Fincher (David’s dad), itself inspired by the controversy over the authorship of Citizen Kane ignited by Pauline Kael’s book Raising Kane, Mank reunites many of the key creatives behind some of the finest films of the past twenty years, including composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, production designer Donald Graham Burt, editor Kirk Baxter and cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt. Fincher has shot the film in black and white, in a style that clearly reflects the expressionist impulses of Welles.
