Leonardo: The Works Image

Leonardo: The Works

MAD | Music/Art/Design

With Leonardo da Vinci in the news more than ever thanks to the record auction price paid for his (supposed) painting Salvator Mundi last year, the timing couldn’t be better for this typically exemplary work from VIFF regular Phil Grabsky (In Search of Beethoven). The fact that this gorgeously made film covers every single attributed painting in Leonardo’s oeuvre, all filmed in Ultra HD, is reason enough to race to the cinema to see the close detail on the big screen, but Grabsky offers us something more, something extremely special: the opportunity to tour some of the world’s preeminent art institutions and hear the words of Leonardo experts analyzing what we see.

Even if you could afford the time and expense to travel to all the museums covered here and see the works in person, your experience would still be greatly enhanced by seeing them in the cinema, so well illuminated and so interestingly brought to life through the expert guidance of the art historians and Leonardo scholars being interviewed in each place. Grabsky has made another wonderful contribution to his ongoing attempt to make the masters come alive.
