In a desolate Chinese fishing village, a young girl lives a tough life with her brother and their single mother, who is trapped by poverty and struggling to survive. This working-class tale of endurance hits is emotionally spot-on without getting cliché sappy. It’s a beautifully crafted film with gorgeous cinematography and excellent use of locations that do an amazing job depicting the family’s tough life, though the children still manage to have fun. The scenes with mom working among the fishing boats down on the docks are particularly poignant. Highlighted by wonderfully natural performances, Pearl is a moving and heartbreaking story about the choices people will make to survive - with a gut-punch ending.
