Checkered Ninja

Ternet Ninja

Panorama | Contemporary World Cinema

A box-office smash in Denmark, this movie is nothing if not irreverent, featuring profanity, sex jokes, and some pretty harsh violence along with its bouncy animation. The opening moments take us to a toy-manufacturing sweatshop in Thailand, where we meet a very evil businessman and witness the coming to life of the titular doll character. The Checkered Ninja soon winds up in Denmark as a gift to young Aske; once the geeky, oft-bullied adolescent discovers his new possession has a life of its own and can teach him to fight, the scene is set for some butt-kicking. Unbeknownst to Aske, however, the Ninja is out for blood…

Is this your typical computer-animated feature? No. Does it push the boundaries of taste? Yes. Is it riotously funny, satirically sharp, and cannily subversive? Again, yes. Co-directors Thorbjørn Christoffersen and Anders Matthesen (the latter adapting his own bestselling book) have crafted a deliciously naughty film about coming of age and the morality of vengeance. The cherry on top is the booming rap soundtrack.

"Slickly entertaining… brazenly atypical." - Jordan Mintzer, Hollywood Reporter
