Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin

MAD | Music/Art/Design

Throughout his career, Werner Herzog has aligned himself with eccentrics and the outright insane. With this deceptively poignant, uncharacteristically sentimental documentary, the legendary Bavarian director finds a compelling surrogate in the English novelist and journalist Bruce Chatwin.

United by their restless spirits and and an interest in nature, myth, and all matters existential, Chatwin and Herzog were friends and admirers of each other’s work until the former died of AIDS in 1989. With the trusty rucksack he was gifted by Chatwin in tow, Herzog travels to the regions that proved inexhaustible sources of inspiration for this incredible talent. Along the way, he crafts a lovely tribute to his late friend and the places - and people - he cared for most.

"Nomad marries its maker’s commentary to tableaux… that convey a sense of profound beauty and primordial mystery, the latter enhanced by Ernst Reijseger’s score of tribal chants and orchestral arrangements. Even though Chatwin is only seen in a handful of snapshots and one brief video snippet, Herzog brings him to vivid life." - Nick Schager, Variety
