Out of Tune
Panorama | Contemporary World Cinema
Accused of financial crimes and held without bail, the rich, snooty Markus Føns (Jacob Hauberg Lohman) doesn’t take too well to jail: within a short time, he’s bruised, shaken, and begging to be put in the isolation wing. Once safe among the pedophiles, rapists, and other segregated inmates, Markus becomes embroiled in a power struggle with Niels (Anders Matthesen), the leader of the jailhouse choir; what follows is a riveting drama spiked with lots of dark comedy.
Out of Tune is propulsive cinema, but it still takes the time to ask questions about how we judge others. Director Frederikke Aspöck and screenwriter Lars Husum (adapting his own play) push the boundaries of empathy and good taste; they’re natural provocateurs, but their button-pushing has a point to it. Full of vivid characters and fine performances, and blessed with a great score from Rasmus Bille Bähncke, this is a movie that knows how to entertain an audience while challenging it.
"Cleverly executed, perfectly performed."- Alissa Simon, Variety
