The Realm

Panorama | Contemporary World Cinema

Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s blistering drama was nominated for 13 Goya awards - Spain’s equivalent of the Oscar - and it won seven, including Best Actor for Antonio de la Torre and Best Director for Sorogoyen. The Realm delves deeply into Spain’s corrupt political system, and the results, though equal parts galvanizing and suspenseful, are indeed disturbing. De la Torre is Manuel Lopez-Videl, an exemplar of his political party’s penchant for money laundering and other white-collar crimes. Until, that is, a leaked tape sets in motion a chain of events that sees him going from player to scapegoat to whistle blower in a dangerous game that extends far beyond the Spanish border.

Sorogoyen’s trenchant direction, which contains more than one eyebrow-raising plot twist, and a superb cast of supporting characters that perfectly embody the phrase "oily political hack" make this both a wicked entertainment and an all-too-possible comment on democracy today.

"Part thriller, part moral skewering and sadly part realistic portrayal, The Realm is guided by a terrific performance from the reliable Antonio de la Torre at the centre of some fine ensemble work. It bowls along at an increasingly urgent, expertly handled pace…" – Jonathan Holland, Hollywood Reporter
