Scarborough Image

Panorama | Contemporary World Cinema

Barnaby Southcombe (I, Anna, VIFF 12), adapting a play by Fiona Evans, examines sexual transgression with a sharp but sympathetic eye. In the resort town of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, two couples check in to the Metropole hotel for the weekend. Daz (Jordan Bolger) is a confident young man of 16; his lover is Liz (Jodhi May), a woman who happens to be one of his high school teachers. Gender is flipped with the other pair of lovers: middle-aged Aiden (Edward Hogg) teaches the energetic, wily Beth (Jessica Barden) at school.

Southcombe cuts adroitly between the couples, and more parallels between them emerge with each plot turn. This rhyming effect is central to the film; it gives the drama an extra charge and infuses the story with mystery. Scarborough works as an erotic chamber piece, as an actors’ showcase and, finally, as a cleverly plotted character study. Prepare to be challenged.

"Intriguing, and at times unsettling… an intelligently slippery study which positions the audience in the grey area between empathy and complicity." - Screen
