Escher: Journey Into Infinity Image

Escher: Journey Into Infinity

Escher: Het Oneindige Zoeken

MAD | Music/Art/Design

"I hover between mathematics and art." So said M.C. Escher, the massively influential master of graphics. One can see tributes to his work in movies, in fiction, on posters, on tattoos, and elsewhere throughout our culture; indeed, few fine artists of the 20th century can lay claim to such popular appeal. Robin Lutz’s entertaining, eye-opening film gives us the man through his own words and images: diary musings, correspondence, and more are voiced by British actor Stephen Fry, and Escher’s woodcuts, lithographs, and other print works appear in both original and playfully altered form.

The Dutch-born Escher studied graphic arts in his home country, but it was during convalescence in Italy that he truly awakened as an artist. Further inspiration came from a trip to the Alhambra in Granada; eventually, the man would fold mathematics into his aesthetic and attempt to portray infinity. This sense of ambition is wonderfully conveyed in the film; Lutz has the spirit of a showman but the scruples of a careful biographer, and his portrait is equal parts history, psychology, and psychedelia.
