Chained Image

Eynayim Sheli

Panorama | Contemporary World Cinema

Director Yaron Shani considers his "Love Trilogy" - of which Chained is the second standalone entry - as "part of the next revolution in cinema, as it rejects the familiar lines between fiction and real life." To that end, he has devised a thoroughly engrossing filmmaking style: he uses nonprofessional actors, tailors the script to their real lives, and then workshops the non-actors in such a way that they live as their characters for, in this case, a year before filming. The results are explosive, intimate, discomfiting - and very impressive.

Tough cop Rashi (Eran Naim, who was a police officer in real life) is a complicated man, one-third sensitive husband to wife Avigail (Stav Almagor) when they learn that the fetus she is carrying is dead, and two-thirds macho authoritarian and strict father to his 13-year-old stepdaughter. After strip-searching a bunch of lippy, entitled teens suspected of dealing drugs, he sees his world start to crumble when one of the humiliated boys complains to his father, a higher-up in the security services…

"A powerful, often uncomfortable scrutiny of machismo given free rein through a policeman’s uniform…" - Jay Weissberg, Variety
