Ville Neuve

True North | True North

It’s the summer of 1995 and the campaign behind the Quebec referendum on independence is in full swing. Tensions are high, debates are raging and buildings are burning. Joseph (voiced by Robert Lalonde) retreats to a friend’s humble house on the coast of Gapsésie and convinces his ex-wife Emma (voiced by Johanne-Marie Tremblay) to join him. Against a backdrop of chaos, this couple reunites, falls back in love and tumbles right back out of it again. A lyrical journey subsisting on striking imagery, Ville Neuve sees personal and collective destinies converge in the quaint village that gives the film its name. With Quebec on the verge of independence, Joseph may just be at the precipice of redemption.

After four years and more than 80,000 hand-crafted drawings, Félix Dufour-Laperrière’s vision has been masterfully realized. This is a small-scale whirlwind of trials and tribulations, a poetic reflection on a society’s quest for identity and an intimate portrait of one man’s existential crisis. The delicate, textured beauty of the animation truly adds another dimension to the turmoil, lulling us into a gentle trance with every seductive brush stroke.
