This smart love story from Rohena Gera, making her dramatic feature debut after the documentary What’s Love Got to Do With It?, follows young widow Ratna (Tillotama Shome) moving from her village to Mumbai, where she gains employment as a house servant. "Sir", or Ashwin (Vivek Gomber), is an architect and the scion of a rich family. He has some marital woes of his own after his engagement is called off.
The two bond over their shared misfortunes, and the suspicion that their parents’ eagerness to have them married off at the earliest opportunity may be at the root of their problems. Of course they fall in love, but for Ratna in particular, class issues, combined with the deeply ingrained patriarchal attitudes Indian women contend with every day, makes the romance seem impossible. This Cinderella story doesn’t necessarily go where we expect it to, but Gera ensures we leave well satisfied, and Shome makes an endearingly dynamic heroine.
"A warmly nuanced look at love in a place filled with constraints and contradictions, and where a broken heart could perhaps be the first step toward emancipation."—Jordan Mintzer, Hollywood Reporter
