Redolent of The Godfather and The Sopranos with a soupçon of Animal Kingdom and a welcome dose of black humour, this entertaining, fast-paced crime thriller is set in the lawless borderlands between the Slovak Republic and Ukraine prior to the former’s accession to the European Union in 2007. It leaps to the top of its genre class with muscular direction, a savvy screenplay, unusual locations spectacularly captured, a propulsive score and impressive performances.

The film’s title refers not only to changing physical boundaries but also to the moral lines that Adam (Tomáš Maštalír), head of a small cigarette-smuggling empire, feels that he must not cross in his efforts to keep his home and business lives separate. As the story begins, Adam faces challenges on both fronts. His sexy eldest daughter is pregnant out of wedlock and some of his gang have been tempted by their cross-border supplier, a ruthless Ukrainian gangster, to smuggle narcotics, a cargo which Adam adamantly refuses to transport… Hang on for a wild ride as the smart, twisty screenplay continually brings more characters and complications into the mix.
