Louise Lecavalier in Motion

M/A/D | Music/Art/Design

Beginning her career as a platinum-blonde dreadlocked dynamo dancing with Edouard Lock’s radical La La La Human Steps company in the early 80s, 58-year-old Louise Lecavalier is a true icon of contemporary Canadian dance. The Montreal-born dancer and choreographer, whose credits include touring with Frank Zappa and David Bowie, is all electric energy, extreme dedication and unrelenting inventiveness. In this mesmerizing homage, Lecavalier’s unwavering creative vision is fully explored, illuminating a woman in perpetual motion, spiritually, mentally and physically.

As a young girl, Lecavalier, though drawn to dance, was convinced that it wasn’t for her, as she didn’t fit the romantic feminine ideal that dance seemed to ascribe for women. When she met the experimental choreographer Edouard Lock at 21, however, she soon found her vocation. Dancing with Lock’s company for the next 15 years, Lecavalier was given the freedom to become herself, developing a style both urgent and tough but also organic and full of grace. In illuminating interviews with Louise and her dance partners we meet a woman obsessed with the art of movement, committed to the precision of each gesture, yet also eternally willing to begin anew. Though still sometimes beset with stage fright, she is possessed of an open-heartedness and sense of wonder that lend her person and art a quality of the ineffable.
