Those Ties That Bind

ALT | Shorts Programs

Relationships are central to our existence; the bonds we make and the bonds we break in many ways define our lives. Though we can find much joy in our relations, in this program of short films there is no easy street among the familial and romantic situations. As in real life, love is a constant often challenged by circumstance.

Director: Akira Kamiki / Brazil, 2017, 12 min.
A gay man tries to understand and comfort his partner, who suffers from long-term depression, and help him find the joy of living again. Excellent performances highlight this tender rendering of a difficult situation, where love and compassion can be pushed to the limit—a scenario well understood by caregivers and family members of those with mental illness.

Director: Joschka Laukeninks / Germany, 2016, 8 min.
A story about how everything we love, everything we learn, everything we build, everything we fear, will one day be gone. There is wonderful sardonic humour in this skillfully constructed, fast-paced cradle-to-grave trip full of highs and lows amidst the relentless advancement of age…

Forever Now

Director: Kristian Haskjold / Denmark, 2016, 19 min.
A young couple decide to break up. Trying to do it amicably, they have a drug-fuelled "last hurrah" weekend, where beautiful heartbreak, punctuated with moments of tenderness, tests their vulnerabilities and insecurities. A warm film with a heartfelt rhythm and vibrancy underpinning it all, this captures that time when you realize life is changing but find it hard to give up on love—a time when one person has chosen to move on but the other has yet to fully accept it.

The Good Girls

Director: Clara Roquet / Spain, 2017, 14 min.
Two sisters navigating the no-man’s-land between childhood and adulthood have to deal with the consequences of their actions after one of the horses on their farm loses an eye. The rustic setting helps to emphasize the old world-new world conflict of morals and practical economics that threaten to undermine a young girl’s idealized world.

Home, Sweet Home

Director: Carlos Polo / Spain, 2017, 6 min.
After 50 years of marriage, a crisis occurs when an elderly man is hospitalized—but his wife arrives at a creative solution to their problems. Inspired by real-life experiences this is a poetic, emotional fantasy about love, support and making the best of a bad situation.

Land of Happy Dreams

Director: Josh Auter / USA, 2016, 15 min.
The grip of poverty threatens a mother’s ability to supply her daughter’s nightly transfusions, but she will do everything she can to provide for her and deflect grim reality. Talk about tough life in the urban wasteland! This wonderful, complex tale of desperation and dedication challenges quick judgments and shows us strength of character cannot be measured by economics or lifestyle.

Director: Ellie Rogers / UK, 2017, 16 min.
A teenage girl unexpectedly spends an evening with her father’s hired escort. Despite initial prejudice, a bond develops between them. There are terrific performances in this tense drama that beautifully capture our heroine’s simultaneous moments of disillusionment and the discovery of new options.

Director: Toni Kamula / Denmark, 2017, 21 min.
When two estranged sisters attend to the details of their father’s estate, it doesn’t take long for old, long-suppressed tensions to manifest themselves. Strong performances from the leads are central to this finely crafted drama that hits many resonant points about long-fractured relationships.
