Dina

Panorama | Documentaries

A special-needs couple, Dina and Scott, are set to be hitched, and like everyone else in their situation they’re adorably, head-over-heals in love. But each of their conditions comes with unique challenges—Scott has Asperger’s Syndrome and Dina has a variety of mental disabilities that her mother simply refers to as being "like a smorgasbord"—and an awkward case of cold feet emerges. Scott, despite openly admitting to pleasing himself, is squeamish about sex, while his fiancée, very much an expert in that department, craves intimacy.

Directors Antonio Santini and Dan Sickle’s heartfelt and charming portrait doesn’t shy away from the darker overtones of its subjects’ pasts. The camera is very much implanted in the couple’s personal space, but, to Santini and Sickle’s credit, the film never verges on exploitation. The directors recount this love story not only for its universal aspects but for all its humorous—and at times very uncomfortable—specifics.

"Alternately comic and tragic and best when it’s both at once, Dina humanizes a world of people who were only dehumanized because we allowed them to be."—David Ehrlich, IndieWire
