Hollow in the Land

Sea to Sky | BC Spotlight

When a body turns up in a trailer park and her missing renegade brother (VIFF 17 fixture Jared Abrahamson, once again deftly balancing brashness and vulnerability) becomes the number one suspect, headstrong Alison (Dianna Agron) take matters into her own hands, setting out to track him down and clear his name before the cops find him. Disturbingly, it seems that the deeper this accidental detective digs, the more people turn up dead, and soon she becomes a suspect herself, attracting all the wrong sorts of attention from the local authorities (Michael Rogers and Shawn Ashmore). In this town tucked away amidst the Kootenay Rockies, secrets tend to get buried deep. If Alison’s not careful, she’ll get buried with them.

Returning to his hometown of Castlegar to shoot his debut feature, Scooter Corkle demonstrates a keen understanding of how, in communities such as this, people tend to be sized up by their surnames alone. Already stigmatized by the sins of her father, Alison makes a daily practice of defying expectations. However, this latest gauntlet thrown down by the fates asks her to tap her reserves of resourcefulness. Bolstered by the lensing of Norm Li (who also shot this year’s Never Steady, Never Still), lent authenticity by casting locals in supporting roles and hinging on a stellar performance from Agron, Hollow in the Land is a gripping backwoods mystery.
