Happy End

Panorama | Special Presentations

With Michael Haneke directing, you know the title of his latest work is nothing if not deeply ironic. Against the unfolding refugee crisis in the coastal town of Calais, the rich, disaffected Laurent family inhabits a grand estate as if it was entitled royalty from a bygone era. The king-like paterfamilias, Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant), is losing his wits and wants to end it all; aunt Anne (the glacial Isabelle Huppert, as good as ever), now in charge of the family’s construction firm, is awaiting her marriage to a British lawyer (Toby Jones) while dealing with a terrible business crisis: her alcoholic wastrel of a son Pierre (Franz Rogowski) is responsible for a devastating accident on a construction site, and fears of a civil suit have the family quivering. Enter Anne’s 13-year-old niece Ève (Fantine Harduin, superb), a frighteningly calm young woman with a penchant for smart devices and a possibly sociopathic personality…

"Happy End is a satirical nightmare of haute-bourgeois European prosperity: as stark, brilliant and unforgiving as a halogen light… It is also as gripping as a satanically inspired soap opera, a dynasty of lost souls… It is unmistakably [Haneke’s] work, presented with his usual masterly compositional flair, a mosaic of horror, filmed by cinematographer Christian Berger [Haneke’s Benny’s Video, Caché and The White Ribbon] in crystal-clear light, often with icily detached long-shot camera positions… Yet here there is an intriguing new tang of comedy or even grisly farce…"—Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
