Awards History

VIFF Awards

Beginning in 1988 when the VIFF gave out its first "Most Popular Film" prize to Some Girls, the Festival has offered a number of awards, both adjudicated and voted on by you, the audience, to deserving films. These awards are:

• The AGF People's Choice Award For Most Popular International Film

The Federal Express Award For Most Popular Canadian Film

Each year, the audience determines this important award.

The 2004 winners of the Federal Express Award for Most Popular Canadian Film are François Prévost and Hugo Latulippe for WHAT REMAINS OF US (Quebec), and Leanne Allison and Diana Wilson for BEING CARIBOU (British Columbia).

Runners-up are: PETER RAYMONT for SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL: THE JOURNEY OF ROMEO DALLAIRE (Ontario); Bill Marchant for EVERYONE (British Columbia); and VELCROW RIPPER for SCAREDSACRED (British Columbia).

Also among the most popular Canadian features, in order of voting:

Ghyslaine Côté’s ELLES ETAIENT CINQ (Quebec)
István Szabó’s BEING JULIA (Canada/UK/Hungary)
Michael Kot’s SHIPBREAKERS (Ontario)
John L'Écuyer’s LE GOUT DES JEUNES FILLES (Quebec)
Francis Leclerc’s MÉMOIRES AFFECTIVES (Quebec)
Mark A. Lewis’ ILL FATED (British Columbia)
Malcolm Guy and Michelle Smith’s TURBULENT WATERS (Quebec)
Vic Sarin’s DELUXE COMBO PLATTER (British Columbia)
Alan Zweig’s I, CURMUDGEON (Ontario)
David Weaver’s SIBLINGS (Ontario)

Thanks for playing your part. Your votes helped detemine these winners and your participation is much appreciated.

Films are ranked based on the number of ballots received and average rating. The information provided by the ballots not only determines the award winning films, but also provides feedback to the Festival and to the party that has kindly supplied the film.
