Vancouver International Film Festival Poster Reflects Global Diversity

Vancouver – The 23rd Vancouver International Film Festival unveiled its 2004 festival poster today. The artwork captures both the traditional and modern nature of cinema. The enigmatic image mirrors the compelling, thought provoking Canadian and international films in this year’s line-up.

“Apart from its exotic beauty, we found these outstretched hands decorated so elaborately in henna, quite an arresting image of peace,” said Festival Director, Alan Franey. “Henna originated in Ancient Egypt and is now used throughout the Arab world, in India, and in some of the most colourful neighbourhoods in Canada. In the world today, we certainly need gestures of peace, attention to beauty, and true, keen insight into other cultures. These are the values that are reflected in our Festival.”

Every year the poster is created to set the tone and reflect the Festival’s Same Planet, Different Worlds theme. This year’s image was shot in Vancouver by photographer Mark Mushet at a Sikh-Christian wedding.

The Vancouver International Film Festival’s purpose is to encourage the understanding of other nations through the art of cinema, to foster the art of cinema, to facilitate the meeting in British Columbia of cinema professionals from around the world, and to stimulate the motion picture industry in B.C. and Canada.

The 23rd annual Vancouver International Film Festival runs from September 23 to October 8. More than 150,000 patrons are expected to attend 500 screenings of over 300 films from 50 countries at 10 Vancouver screens: Cineplex Odeon Granville Cinemas (7 screens); the VISA Screening Room at the Vogue Theatre; The Ridge; and the Pacific Cinémathèque.

All box offices open September 4 for VISA cardholders. Cash sales begin September 11. The fastest way to buy advance tickets is at www.viff.org, 24 hours a day, or through the VISA Charge-by-Phone line at 604-685-8297, open noon to 7pm.
