A smart, propulsive horror movie that continually ratchets up the fear and shock factors, Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s [REC]--as in the “record” function on a video camera--uses a conceit popularized by The Blair Witch Project, takes it to a new level of cinematic prowess and scares the hell out of audiences in the process.

Young, ambitious television presenter Angela (Manuela Velasco) and her cameraman tag along overnight with a Barcelona fire crew in order to illustrate what goes on while the average joan is asleep. Called out to an apartment building to investigate what appears to be an injured elderly woman, Angela, her cameraman, a couple of the firemen and two cops soon find more than they bargained for: the injured woman attacks and has to be shot. “Keep recording!” becomes Angela’s mantra as the TV duo, the beleaguered tenants and the rescue workers find themselves quarantined by the authorities due to a virus that makes people do terrible things to each other… Recently purchased by Hollywood for a big-budget re-make (meaning that this is the only chance you will have to see the original on the big screen!), [REC] unfolds almost in real time once the action begins, with a constantly moving camera, meticulously choreographed long takes and an increasing sense of terror transmitted to the audience by both the visual dexterity demonstrated by the directors and the superb work of the acting ensemble led by Velasco. [REC] may just leave you feeling like one as you exit the theatre...
