Bard On The Screen
Brush up your Shakespeare! In partnership with Bard on the Beach, the Vancity Theatre is proud to present four exceptional Shakespeare films on Monday evenings through May: Kenneth Branagh’s MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and HENRY V; Jon Scoffield’s film of Trevor Nunn’s 1974 production ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA; plus a very rare screening of Orson Welles’ masterly CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, his film about John Falstaff, which draws from both parts of Henry IV, as well as from Henry V, Richard II and The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Each screening comes with an introduction by a member of this summer’s Bard on the Beach team and a discussion after the show. All ages welcome.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Mon 3 May 6:30
Director: Kenneth Branagh // UK, USA 1993 // 111 min // 35mm // PG
Cast: Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Kate Beckinsale, Robert Sean Leonard, Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves, Richard Briars, Michael Keaton
For his second stab at filming the Bard (after his acclaimed Henry V), Kenneth Branagh produced this supremely confident Anglo-American romp. This is an invigorating, sensual and dynamic take on Shakespeare's sex comedy, transplanted to a glorious Tuscan villa and cast with an eye for beauty and an ear for wit. More

ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA
Mon May 17, 6:30
Directors: Jon Scoffield and Trevor Nunn // UK 1974 // 161 min // DVD // Cast: Richard Johnson, Janet Suzman, Patrick Stewart, Corin Redgrave, Rosemary McHale, Ben Kingsley
Powerhouse performances from Janet Suzman (The Draughtsman's Contract), Richard Johnson (The Haunting) and Patrick Stewart (as Enobarbus) drove Trevor Nunn's 1972 RSC production, and when Jon Scoffield came to film it for British TV he chose to accentuate the intimacy of the play and the resonance of the language by concentrating almost exclusively on close ups ... CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT
Mon May 24, 6:30
Director: Orson Welles // France, Spain 1965 // 119 min // DVD // Cast: Orson Welles, Keith Baxter, John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Jeanne Moreau, Margaret Rutherford, Marina Vlady, Fernando Rey
"How can it be that there is an Orson Welles masterpiece that remains all but unseen? This is a magnificent film, clearly among Welles' greatest work, joining Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, Touch of Evil and (I would argue) The Trial. It is also magnificent Shakespeare, focusing on Falstaff through the two Henry IV plays to his offstage death in Henry V." More

HENRY V
Mon May 31, 6:30
Director: François Truffaut // France 1959 // 99 minutes // 35mm
Cast: Jean-Pierre Léaud, Claire Maurier, Albert Rémy
"Kenneth Branagh's superb 1989 version of the Shakespeare play, which he directed and adapted as well as stars in, is distinctly different from Laurence Olivier's 1944 movie. The earlier film was intended to whip up patriotic sentiment, but Branagh's version has a much darker view of England's defeat of France, more relevant in certain respects to World War I..." More
