The Art of Prep: Directing Workshop (NFD01)

Your film has been greenlit. Now what?! How do you choose key creative collaborators? What’s your role during a casting session? How do you break down a scene into a shot list? Are storyboards necessary? Floor plans for each set? What are the key questions to ask during a location scout? How do you work with your AD to create a do-able shooting schedule? How do you prep for crowd scenes? Acclaimed director Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown, Twilight, Red Riding Hood) is notorious for her extensive prep on a film. Join us as she brings her stories to life, from concept to camera – replete with handouts.

The Establishing Shot (NFD01)

Possibly the most important of all creative collaborators on a film, the cinematographer is paramount in helping set the tone, vision and style of your film. In this case study, our featured cinematographer will cover the director/cinematographer relationship; establishing style; designing shots to enhance story-telling; customized lighting for certain characters or areas within the frame; getting sufficient coverage within allotted time; lens selection; and working with available light vs. crafting light. Clips from his latest film will be used to illustrate specific cinematography choices.
