Co-Producing with Europe (FTV11)

Canada is one of the most prolific co-production partners in the world, with the majority of our co-pros being made with European partners. With dwindling production dollars in the international marketplace, it has never been more important for producers to explore new production partners and alternative forms of financing. Join us for a candid discussion with Canadian and European producers about the key challenges and advantages of dealing with international partners – fulfilling commitments, shared contributions, expectations, recoupment of investment, approvals, currency devaluations, etc.

Endings: The Good, The Bad, and The Insanely Great by Michael Arndt  (FTV12)

Some movies leave you feeling indifferent; some leave you satisfied; and some leave you exhilarated, walking on air, and seeing the world through new eyes.  What, then, is the difference between a bad ending, a good ending, and an insanely great ending?  Screenwriter Michael Arndt attempts to answer that question with a close analysis of the climaxes of Star Wars, The Graduate, and his own script, Little Miss Sunshine.

Designed for emerging and transitioning filmmakers, these sessions are the perfect opportunity to have one-on-one meetings with local senior production executives and broadcasters; pitch projects; receive feedback; and forge new relationships! Limit is two meetings per speed dater and you must have purchased an additional item to the Forum to be eligible for registration.

Indie Production in the 21st Century (FTV14)

US-American film producer Richard Zanuck once said: “The producer is like the conductor of an orchestra. Maybe he can’t play every instrument, but he knows what every instrument should sound like.” From dealing with myriad production details to providing insights and feedback on the creative aspects of filmmaking, and from financing to marketing and distributing, the role of the producer is constantly evolving in a rapidly changing marketplace. Our two veteran filmmakers will provide examples of some of their past projects and discuss how they attract talent and develop relationships, raise private financing, explore new routes in the digital arena to reach a wider audience-base and connect content with the creative reality of producing films.

Directing Essentials (FTV16)

Our guest directors will discuss: going beyond the limitations of the script; photography as a story-telling tool; how sound design and music combine to add another dimension; the importance of the editing process; and, last but not least, how to demystify tone – the most illusive but essential element of the filmmaking craft.
