NEW FILMMAKERS' DAY
Saturday, September 29
9:00 – 10:30 am Fast Forward: Filmmakers Seize Control (NFD01)
The digital age is upon us - and savvy indie filmmakers are actively harnessing its power and leaving the studios in the dust! How can you get in on the action? We bring together a panel of hot indie filmmakers to give you the inside scoop. Through two focused case studies, you'll learn about: breaking with traditional formats; building a fan base through social networking; creating a viral buzz; where the new emerging markets are; how to set up a theatrical tour of your film; internet DVD sales and downloads; and expanding your audience through re-mixing and mash-ups.
10:45 – 12:15 pm The Art of Low Budget Screenwriting (NFD01)
Although emerging filmmakers are hampered by tight budgets, their greatest resource is their imagination. Todd Field, writer-director of In the Bedroom understood that “It's really the small moments that count.” In Little Miss Sunshine , those small moments lead to an art house cross-over success, culminating in an Oscar for screenwriter Michael Arndt. This session follows our surprise guest speaker's journey from idea to script to screen… and critical and box office success.

As an art form, cinema will always be a collaborative medium. Two of the key creative collaborators whose combined efforts can help a director transform a film into visual magic, are the DOP and PD. Whether they are creating moody impressionistic atmospheres, or simply using natural light to maximum effect in a simple scene, the DOP/PD team have made significant contributions to cinema. In this master class, two gifted filmmakers will share numerous tricks of the trade gained through their individual and/or collaborative work.
