Guided by Leonard Cohen’s funereal “Dance Me to the End of Love,” a grinning 11-year-old birthday girl drifts onto a balcony, plummets to her death and takes a dark secret along with her. Investigating the incident, a child-welfare worker (Maria Skoula) uncovers a family tree that’s closer to a tangled, thorny briar thicket intent on entrapping the unwitting and drawing blood. Director Alexandros Avranas methodically scrapes away at the disaffectedness of the bereaved until the festering wound at the heart of this dysfunctional household is exposed. And as the truth concerning the intimidating patriarch (Themis Panou) and his progeny is revealed, we learn far too late that there are some stones best left unturned.

“Interest in the new ‘weird’ wave of Greek cinema is growing after the festival and arthouse success of films such as Dogtooth, Attenberg and Alps… But Miss Violence is a much less wantonly quirky film than those… It derives its shock value from the fact that it stays (just) within the bounds of the believable… Filmed largely in washed-out pastels, with neutral or retro clothes and bland petit-bourgeois interiors (as well as the absence of mobile phones) pushing the action into a past-present netherworld, Miss Violence is at its best when it hints rather than shows… [An] implacable portrayal of tyranny in action.”—Lee Marshall, Screen
