Six pregnant women in Anand, in northwest India, dream of the better life they’ll enjoy the day their babies are born… and then handed over to their rightful mothers. A sensitive, well-crafted examination of the complex issue of surrogacy, Valerie Gudenus’ documentary chronicles these women’s aspirations and the complications that arise during their nine-month journeys. The result is a subtle and necessary group portrait that gives a voice to those who would otherwise remain unheard.
"When I first met the surrogate mothers in Anand, I remember being immensely touched and impressed by the sheer strength and courage these women muster every day of their lives… I realized that my film would have to tell their personal stories, and by doing so, talk about the value of women and the value of life in general. What makes a life valuable? Can you even measure the value of giving life?… Recent events in India have again shown the need to tell stories like these. Stories about dreaming of a better future, about pursuing these dreams in spite of the harsh realities of life. I hope to pass on the voices and the experiences of these women to reflect on the inequality and the codependence of today’s civilizations."—Valerie Gudenus
