Chinese indie documentarian Yang Lina’s first fiction film is unprecedented in Chinese cinema: a truly erotic depiction of female desire, shot from a woman’s point of view.
Fang Lei, an upper-middle-class Beijing housewife, leads a normal, peaceful life with her husband and school-age daughter until a lover appears in her dreams. He can only be glimpsed, ghostlike, but his touch awakens heretofore unknown desires in her. This ghost lover becomes her obsession. Afraid she is losing her grip on reality, Fang turns to a Taoist priest for help, then seeks solace in a Buddhist monastery. But the powerful religious fervour she discovers there seems not that dissimilar to her obsessive erotic dreams…
“The ghost in this film accompanied me through the years of my youth. I could not tell whether he was just my way of escaping from the real world or whether he really existed. I sometimes even wonder whether every other woman has a hidden ghost too.
The heroine walks freely between Yin and Yang, shuttling between fantasy and reality. She finds her own way to deal with the world around her, and enjoy it. I attempted many different things—trying to blur the boundaries between documentary and feature films. The final result is a bit like a magic mirror constantly urging me to touch it.”—Yang Lina
