Heaven and Earth is both this year’s title for our regular environmental series, and a theme we’re pointing to in films across several VIFF series.
Perhaps reacting to the homogenization of globalized lifestyles, many young (and not so young) filmmakers are taking us to remote places for direct encounters with ‘antiquated life-styles’ and nature in the raw. Amidst the glories that these voyages represent we also often see meditations on disappearing history that are graceful, melancholic and inspiring.
VIFF has been inspired by the remarkable range of new films which marry aesthetic pleasure and environmental sensitivity. Whatever your politics, certain kinds of films take us out-of-doors in marvelous ways, leaving us to draw our own conclusions about how to better live our lives.
