Mandate

The Greater Vancouver International Film Festival Society (“Society”) is a not-for-profit cultural society whose mandate is to:

  1. to encourage understanding of the world’s cultures through the art of cinema, to foster the art of cinema, to facilitate the meeting in British Columbia of cinema professionals from around the world, and to stimulate the motion picture industry in British Columbia.
  2. to operate an annual Vancouver International Film Festival, a festive public celebration bringing to British Columbia the best in contemporary Canadian and international cinema and retrospective programs.
  3. to operate the Vancouver International Film Centre, providing the public and film community with an excellent facility for the appreciation of cinema and related art forms throughout the year.

Vancouver International Film Festival

Both in terms of admissions and number of films screened (140,000 and 386 respectively in 2012) VIFF is among the five largest film festivals in North America. We screen films from 80 countries on 10 screens. The international line-up includes the pick of the world’s top film fests and many undiscovered gems.  VIFF 2011 included 20 World premieres, 30 International premieres, 49 North American premieres and 40 Canadian premieres.

Three main programming platforms make our festival unique: we screen the largest selection of East Asian films outside of that region, we are one of the biggest showcases of Canadian film in the world and we have a large and important nonfiction program.

Attracting a large, attentive and enthusiastic audience of film lovers, the festival remains accessible, friendly and culturally diverse. As the critics say, VIFF is very much a festival “designed for the benefit of people who love films and people who make them.”

VIFF Film + TV Forum

The Vancouver Film & TV Forum, the largest event of its kind in western Canada, takes place annually during the Vancouver International Film Festival. The Fourm’s mandate is to develop and strengthen the Canadian film and television industry and to help our filmmakers produce quality product for domestic and international markets.

The Film & TV Forum hosts a series of panel discussions, pitching forums, master classes, tete-a-tete meetings, roundtable discussions and speed dating sessions, all geared to the professional development of the local film, television and new media communities. We also provide an exciting platform for our delegates to access domestic and global market leaders, share the expertise of our international speakers and make the most of the opportunity to meet and foster working relationships with their peers. Our New Filmmakers' Day (NFD), the only event of its kind in Western Canada and a 'standing-room-only' event for the past seven years, is specifically designed to cater to emerging writers, producers and directors of film and television. And let's not forget the social events! The Forum's receptions, parties and lunches are the ideal venue for networking opportunities with our delegates, guest speakers, sponsors and media.
